What is Electrical Panel?

An electrical panel, also known as a distribution board, breaker panel, or fuse box, is a crucial component of an electrical system in a building. It is a metal box that houses various electrical components, including circuit breakers or fuses, that control and distribute electricity to different areas or circuits within the building.
The main purpose of an electrical panel is to receive electrical power from the utility service and distribute it safely and efficiently to various electrical circuits throughout the building. It serves as a central point where electrical circuits can be controlled, protected, and monitored.
The electrical panel is typically located in a readily accessible area, such as a utility room or basement. It receives the main power supply, which is usually a high voltage AC (alternating current) from the utility company. The panel then distributes this power to different circuits at a lower voltage suitable for household or commercial use.
The panel consists of several components, including:
Main Service Disconnect: It is a large circuit breaker or switch that allows you to shut off the entire electrical supply to the building.
Circuit Breakers or Fuses: These protective devices are designed to automatically interrupt the flow of electricity in a circuit if an overload, short circuit, or fault occurs. Circuit breakers are more common in modern panels, whereas older panels may still use fuses.
Bus Bars: These are metal bars or conductors inside the panel that distribute the electrical power to the individual circuit breakers or fuses.
Neutral and Grounding Bars: The neutral bar connects the neutral wires from the circuits, while the grounding bar connects the grounding wires from the circuits and the grounding electrode system of the building. These bars ensure proper grounding and provide a path for electrical faults to safely dissipate.
Wiring Connections: The electrical panel contains multiple wiring connections, where the main power supply enters the panel and connects to the circuit breakers or fuses. It also includes connections for the neutral and grounding wires.
The electrical panel is an essential part of the electrical system as it ensures the safe and reliable distribution of electricity throughout the building. It allows for individual circuit protection, making it easier to isolate and troubleshoot electrical issues and provides a means for turning off power in case of emergencies or maintenance work.

The first step you should always take when working with electricity is to shut off the power. Knowing what every breaker controls in your home is a simple solution to keeping you safe as well as saving you time on an electrical project and that's what we will be covering today by mapping your electrical panel box. Always remember to wear protective gloves and safety glasses when working on your electrical system.
The first thing we're going to do today is locate and familiarize ourselves with our home's electrical panel box. The panel box location can vary depending on where you live, the age and structure of your home. In my home, the panel happens to be inside the garage. Let's open it up and examine the main components of the panel. There is one main disconnect switch which will shut off power to every breaker on your panel. Then there are the breakers that control areas of electricity throughout your home. Then you have different wires so your neutral wires will be white, your ground wires will be bare and your hot wires will be anything attached to the breakers. Typically located on the panel door is your breaker label. This is where you map your home's electricity. If you are not the original homeowner or even if you are, you cannot consider the panel is labeled correctly. I see mislabeled panels all the time in my customers homes. So you will want to test each breaker for accuracy.

Mapping of panel

Step 1: Take a picture of the panel label before making any alterations to it. You will want something to refer back to just in case.
Step 2: Even if a previous occupant labeled each breaker, you will want to verify that the descriptions are still accurate. You will be flipping all breakers to the off position at some point and this process could take a while. So before you turn off the power, I recommend you mapping your circuits during daytime hours when you utilize the least energy. Note that major appliances such as furnaces, air conditioners, electric dryers and ovens often have dedicated double pole circuit breakers. Turn the first breaker to the off position, go around to different appliances and outlets to check which appliance corresponds with that breaker. Once this is established, label the breaker. An outlet tester is a quick and easy way to test various outlets. It is also a handy tool when you're working on an outlet and require to test it.
Step 3: Repeat this process, testing the remaining breakers and electrical components throughout your home.
Step 4: This is optional but will definitely save you even more time with future electrical projects. As you confirm outlets in your home with the right breakers. Consider removing each outlets faceplate and writing the breaker number on the back of the plate. Knowing how your electrical panel is arranged can be a big help when a circuit breaker trips, a fuse blows or when taking on an electrical project. These steps will also help you in keeping safety a priority.
